“Every good gift and every perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of lights, with whom can be no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning. Of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth, that we should be a kind of first-fruits of his creatures.” (James 1:17-18)
This morning’s verse tells us about the ultimate origin of all that is truly good and perfect. Nothing we possess—whether material blessings, spiritual graces, or talents—originates from ourselves. These are all gifts bestowed upon us by our Heavenly Father, Almighty God, who is described here as the “Father of lights.” This divine title gives special importance to God’s sovereignty and holiness, as the Creator of the heavens, whose light is unchangeable and constant.
James further clarifies that with God “there is no variation, neither shadow that is cast by turning.” This tells us about the absolute immutability of God. (cf. Numbers 23:19; Hebrews 13:8) Unlike the created lights, such as the sun and moon, which wax and wane, and create shadows, God’s light remains ever constant, unyielding to change or decay. This tells us a great deal about God’s nature being pure and perfect, devoid of any darkness or inconsistency. (cf. John 1:5)
James continues to build upon this thought when he wrote that “of his own will he brought us forth by the word of truth.” He is speaking of God’s will that brought us into spiritual life, not by our own merit, but by His grace through His word. It is God’s will that we should be reborn in the truth of Christ, and as such, we are to be considered the “first-fruits of His creatures.” This is a special calling and dignity—Christians are set apart, consecrated to God, as the first-fruits of His creation, offered back to Him in sanctity.
