“Blessed are those who have been persecuted for righteousness’ sake, for theirs is the Kingdom of Heaven. Blessed are you when people reproach you, persecute you, and say all kinds of evil against you falsely, for my sake. Rejoice, and be exceedingly glad, for great is your reward in heaven. For that is how they persecuted the prophets who were before you.” (Matthew 5:10-12)
Today’s verse contains a strong reminder of the cost of following Christ. Christ teaches us that those who endure hardship and suffering because of their faith will ultimately be rewarded with eternal life in the Kingdom of Heaven. Persecution is a harsh reality for many Christians throughout history and even today. It can take many forms, from physical violence and imprisonment to social ostracism and discrimination. Yet, our Lord assures us that those who remain steadfast in righteousness, even in the face of adversity, will be blessed.
The word “blessed” in this context is not simply a synonym for “happy” or “fortunate.” It carries a deeper meaning—a spiritual and divine blessing that transcends earthly understanding. To be blessed by God is to be in a state of grace, favour, and protection.
As disciples of the Lord Jesus Christ we must develop and maintain courage and perseverance. Our ultimate reward lies not in worldly pleasures, but in the eternal joy of the Kingdom of heaven. May each of us be willing to endure hardship for the sake of righteousness, knowing that our suffering is not in vain.
