“You are the salt of the earth, but if the salt has lost its flavour, with what will it be salted? It is then good for nothing, but to be cast out and trodden under the feet of men.” (Matthew 5:13)
Salt, a precious commodity in ancient times, was essential for preserving food and enhancing its flavour. Just as salt, when added to food, enhances its taste, so too, Christians are meant to enhance the world around them. We are to be a seasoning agent, bringing flavour, preserving goodness, and preventing spiritual decay. What happens when salt loses its flavour? It becomes useless. It can no longer fulfil its purpose. In the same way, if believers lose their spiritual vitality they become ineffective in their witness for Christ.
Christ’s warning is dire: such ones are cast out and trodden underfoot. This should be a reminder for us of the importance of maintaining our spiritual health.
