“Enter ye in by the narrow gate: for wide is the gate, and broad is the way, that leadeth to destruction, and many are they that enter in thereby. For narrow is the gate, and straitened the way, that leadeth unto life, and few are they that find it.” (Matthew 7:13-14)
In our journey of faith, we often encounter choices and crossroads that shape the direction of our lives. In Matthew 7:13-14, Jesus presents us with a profound truth: there are only two roads of choice for a Christian. One is wide and easy, leading to destruction, while the other is narrow and challenging, leading to life. These two paths represent the contrasting choices we face as followers of Christ. Let’s take a moment to reflect on the significance of these roads and their implications for our daily walk with God.
The Wide Road
The wide road refers to the world’s alluring and enticing ways, everything that was created by Satan to distract us from serving Almighty God. The wide road offers instant gratification, comfort, and conformity to the prevailing culture. This road is easy to find, as many people blindly follow its enticing promises. However, as followers of Christ, we are called to discern its true nature. Although it may seem pleasant at first, it ultimately leads to destruction. The wide road encourages self-centredness, gross materialism, and moral compromise. It entices us to prioritise our desires over God’s will and conform to societal norms that often contradict the teachings of Christ.
The Narrow Road
The narrow road stands in stark contrast to the wide road. It is less travelled and more challenging, requiring commitment, sacrifice, and surrender to God’s will. This road demands that we deny ourselves, take up our Cross daily, and follow Jesus. “[Jesus] said unto all, If any man would come after me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross daily, and follow me.” (Luke 9:23). The narrow road compels us to embrace humility, holiness, and obedience to God’s Word. It will involve facing persecution, enduring trials, and making choices that are countercultural. Yet, this road leads to life—true life found in an intimate relationship with our Saviour and the hope of eternal glory.
As believers, we must recognise the importance of choosing the narrow road. We are called to live differently, as ambassadors of Christ in a fallen world (2 Corinthians 5:20). Following Jesus requires us to make decisions that align with His teachings, even when they are unpopular or challenging. It means loving our enemies, forgiving those who hurt us, and pursuing righteousness. It means putting God’s Kingdom above our own ambitions and living with an eternal perspective.
Brothers and sisters, we are not alone on this narrow road. Jesus, our Good Shepherd, walks with us every step of the way. He is our guide, our strength, and our source of wisdom. As we navigate the challenges and temptations of this toxic world, let us fix our eyes on Jesus, “the author and perfecter of our faith.” (Hebrews 12:2) Let us embrace the truth that the narrow road, though difficult, leads to true life. It is a road marked by God’s presence and grace. On this road, we are continually shaped and conformed into the image of Christ, growing in faith, love, and character.
Let us renew our commitment to walking the narrow road. Let us seek God’s guidance, immerse ourselves in His Word the Bible every day, and surrender our lives to His will no matter what the cost. May we be courageous and bold, shining as lights in a world that desperately needs the message of the Gospel. Let us reflect on the road we are currently travelling as followers of Christ. Are we faithfully walking the narrow road or have we strayed onto the wide road? We should examine our hearts daily, make intentional choices, and surrender ourselves fully to God’s will. Let us embrace the challenges and blessings of the narrow road, knowing that it leads to life, both now and for eternity.
